what is physical literacy?
the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the health of the whole person.
why is it important?
While physical fitness (e.g. the number of push-ups in a minute, or 1-mile run time) is an important factor in overall health, it merely provides a snapshot of a child’s health and general physiology at a particular moment in time. However, physical fitness says very little about a child’s overall capacity and affinity for participating in future physical activity.
Many children currently specialize in a sport at an early age without developing the fundamental movement skills necessary to play the sport effectively at higher levels while minimizing the risk of injuries. Furthermore, many youth athletes experience “burnout” at some point in their childhood and will discontinue participation in their sport without having developed a foundation of skills that enable them to continue physical activity into adulthood. This often leads to children discontinuing physical activity altogether and contributes to sedentary lifestyles, obesity, and health problems.
A structured physical fitness approach must be balanced with proper coaching to develop physical literacy so today’s youth can learn to enjoy exercise and develop all the fundamental skills necessary to continue exercising their entire lives, whether that is through athletics or general health and wellness.
